Research Experience Science Insights Science Insights is an exciting work experience programme designed to give S5 year high school pupils a real insight into the work and life of research scientists. The annual programme was launched in 2014 in partnership with the Roslin Institute, and many of our alumni have gone on to pursue science at a university and postgraduate level.Every July, we invite forty high school students from across Scotland to spend a week of their summer in the University of Edinburgh’s College of Medicine and Veterinary Medicine. Students gain real insight into the world of biomedical research. This week is hosted by the Institute of Genetics and Cancer, Institute for Regeneration and Repair, and Roslin Institute. Students follow a varied programme of activities on different University of Edinburgh campuses, gaining a real insight into research and work in biological sciences. Activities include:Lab-based research taster sessionsTours of scientific facilitiesPresentations and discussions on a range of topics, including ethics in research, the use of animals in research and various careers pathsOpportunities to meet current University of Edinburgh studentsSkills session to help with future university and job applicationsYou can find more information, and details on how to apply Science Insights | College of Medicine and Vet MedicineApplications usually open in February and close in April. Research placements and work experience We are not able to offer a lab-based work experience programme in the Institute of Genetics and Cancer. However, we encourage our researchers to arrange placements with interested students when they have the capacity to do so. The best approach is to view our research groups, and contact a researcher whose work interests you. Please note that for safety reasons, visitors to the lab need to be sixteen or over in order to take part in labwork. Visitors under sixteen can still visit the lab, but can only observe labwork. For this reason we recommend that students apply for a placement when they will be aged sixteen of over, to get the most out of the experience. Summer placements Unfortunately, we are not in a position to offer paid research placements, or to cover travel or lunch costs. Several external organisations work with researchers to arrange paid summer placements for school students. If you are interested in working with a particular researcher, you may want to ask if they are taking part, or would consider taking part, in these programmes.IGC are not in a position to fund stipends or travel costs for work experience placements. However, if you are interested in applying to a funded programme, we will happily support you in this. Some organisations which will can offer bursaries or financial support for students undertaking research placements are:In2STEM - In2scienceUK provides placements for S5/S6 or Year 12 students, with programmes running from July to August. Applications usually open in December and close in April.SSERC | Research Placements Programmes provide two-week placements over July and August.
