Doors Open Day 2025 @ The Institute of Genetics and Cancer

About this event

We offered a full programme of building tours, talks, videos, and drop-in activities.

Our family-friendly activities included crawling inside a giant cell, learning about genetic engineering, viewing samples through a microscope, and more.

Our researcher talks highlighted some of the research going on in the Institute along with ways to get involved, showcased the work of our graduate students in flash talks, and discussed life as a scientist in our ‘Day in the life’ session.

We also offered building tours and lab visits throughout the day. Visitors had a chance to view the labs and research facilities, including our newly-completed 4D Cellular Medicine Building.

2025 Theme - Architectural Heritage: Windows to the Past, Doors to the Future

Our institute’s story of biomedical research stretches back to the post-war period, with the facilities and remit of the institute evolving in response to new scientific discoveries and population health needs. We were also pleased to welcome visitors to the newly opened 4D Cellular Medicine building, which represents our own ‘Door to the future’ of research and healthcare.

Agenda

Patient involvement in research

Visitors heard how our patient advisors are shaping the research carried out in IGC, and what it is like to get involved in the research process as someone with lived expertise. The session featured Prof. Chris Ponting (Chair of Medical Bioinformatics) and Jenny Sharma (Patient and Public Involvement manager, CRUK Scotland Centre).

Video: A history of IGC

A history of the research centres which now make up the IGC, including our most recent addition, the 4D Cellular Medicine building. (This video will play on a loop.)

A Day In The Life

What do scientists do all day? What is the difference between bioinformatics and working in the wet lab? And what are the different roles within a research institute? If you're considering studying science or just want a glance behind the scenes, this session aimed to answer your questions.

Inside-out and outside-in: how our genes and environment shape our health

This session highlighted how the environment we grow up in shapes our health in unexpected ways, how scientists are using gene therapies to treat illness, and how collaborating across the boundaries of different specialties can lead to breakthroughs. It featured Prof. Sara Brown (Grant Chair of Dermatology) and Dr. Chris Boyd (Reader in Genomic and Experimental Medicine).

Science in a flash

Our researchers gave a whirlwind tour of the topics investigated in IGC in a series of three-minute flash talks.
