IGC Cross-disciplinary day

Staff and students attended a half-day event to celebrate the IGC's vibrant interdisciplinary research community.

The event included short talks from a range of ECRs and a keynote talk from Dr Chris Foley, Managing Director of Optima Partners and Chief Data Scientist at BioXcelerate AI.

The day started with an opening/welcome address by IGC Director Joris Veltman and was followed by short talks from five IGC speakers:
  • Dr Catherine Naughton, Senior Postdoctoral Research Fellow in Nick Gilbert’s group: ‘Transcription dependent propagation of DNA supercoiling’
  • Joshua Slaughter, third-year PhD student in the Khamseh and Ponting groups: 'Targeted Genomic Estimation to Uncover Genomic Risk Loci in ME/CFS in the UK Biobank'
  • Dr Ines Mesa-Eguiagaray, Statistical Geneticist working with the Theodoratou and Dunlop research groups: ‘Genome-wide aggregated trans-effects (GATE) on CRC risk: a meta-analysis of SOCCS and UK Biobank’
  • Rashi Krishna, second-year PhD student in Ailith Ewing’s lab: ‘Between biology and bytes: searching for drug response biomarkers in leiomyosarcoma’
  • Dr Nathan Constantine-Cooke, Postdoctoral Researcher in health data science: ‘Longitudinal analysis of disease course in IBD: Inflammatory patterns across Scotland and Denmark’.

It concluded with an informal interview with Dr Foley before a break for lunch.
The afternoon started with a short talk by Dr Martina Elias, a Senior Postdoctoral Fellow in the Skin Research Group lead by Professor Sara Brown, on ‘Using skin cell and organoid models to understand atopic eczema genetics and drive therapeutic development’.
It finished with a keynote talk by Dr Foley on 'Weaving academic innovation into genetically-driven drug discovery: A view from the interface'.
