John Inglis Prize awarded for Best PhD student presentations

The John Inglis prize is awarded each year in memory of John Inglis, a former PhD student at the MRC Human Genetics Unit, to a penultimate year PhD student who gives the best research presentation.

Ten students presented their work on a range of topics, from AMUSE: Adaptive Model Updating using a Simulated Environment to An in vivo CRISPRko screen for novel nonsense-mediated mRNA decay factors.

The 2024 John Inglis prize was won by Ottavia Olson, who presented her research on mechanisms of DNA helicase recruitment to the eukaryotic replisome, and Giovanna Weykopf for her presentation on prioritization and functional analysis of human genetic risk variants for severe COVID-19.

Jointly winning the John Inglis prize is really encouraging positive feedback. It is exciting to be at the stage of my PhD where my work has produced new insights that I can now share with others to raise awareness of the impact and challenges of following up host genetic risk variants.
