Recipients of the annual awards, of which only two are awarded to early career researchers, have been recognised for excellence in their field.

Tom joined the MRC Human Genetics Unit as Group Leader in September 2021 and brings outstanding biochemistry expertise to the Unit through his previous work at the MRC PPU and CRUK Clare Hall Laboratories.

Tom’s group investigate the fundamental molecular mechanisms that cells use to replicate their DNA, and how these mechanisms contribute to stable genome inheritance between cells and between generations. In recent years, Tom has harnessed innovative biochemical and structural biology approaches to unpick the ill-defined ‘termination’ stage of this fundamental biological process.

Candidates for Biochemical Society awards are nominated by their peers and the winners are agreed by a judging panel of respected scientists from across a range of different scientific backgrounds.

Previous winners of the Early Career Researcher awards include Joe Marsh (2016).

I am absolutely delighted to have won this award. The list of previous winners is very impressive; I’m honoured to join them, and I hope this will be a springboard for starting my group at the MRC Human Genetics Unit. I would like to thank all the people who supported my nomination, particularly Drs. John Diffley and Karim Labib, who have been fantastic mentors to me, as well as all the brilliant scientists that I have had the pleasure to work alongside over the years.
