Edinburgh Super-resolution Imaging Consortium Summer School 2019

The sixth annual summer school of the Edinburgh Super-resolution Imaging Consortium (ESRIC) took place at the MRC Institute of Genetics and Molecular Medicine, University of Edinburgh and Heriot-Watt University 15 - 19 July 2019.

The Summer School brought together 35 students from across the globe for a week-long programme that provided them access to state-of-the-art technologies at both campuses and the opportunity to learn from experts in the field.

Attendees began the week by learning about the theory of super-resolution microscopy techniques as well as attending bite-sized workshops. A fresh addition to the programme for 2019, the workshops were hosted by new industry partners - global supplier Bruker and Dutch microscopy companies Confocal.nl and Scientific Volume Imaging.

Delegates spent the latter part of the week in groups rotating around sessions led by some of ESRIC’s other industry partners – Leica, Zeiss, Nikon, Andor, Hamamatsu and Gattaquant - to witness some technology in action. These included Stimulated Emission Depletion (STED), Structured Illumination Microscopy (SIM), Super Resolution Radial Fluctuations (SRRF) and some new workshops for 2019 - Single Molecule Localisation Microscopy (SMLM) analysis, Lattice SIM, Nikon/Yokagowa Super resolution via Optical Re-assignment (SoRa) and the Gattascope.

Advanced light microscopy has huge potential to give us new insight into biological mechanisms but is challenging to use on biological material and data analysis is not trivial.  IGMM are therefore proud to be able to co-host the 6th ESRIC Summer School giving researchers from around the world the opportunity to be immersed in the theory and practicalities of advanced imaging and to interact with experts from the field and with microscope manufacturers. It’s also terrific to see such a vibrant and global community gathered together enhancing the IGMM community each summer.

The ESRIC summer school is made possible through the support of its speakers, industry partners and sponsors which include the Medical Research Council, the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council, Wellcome and the Royal Microscopical Society who co-organised the event for a third year running.

ESRIC, a collaboration between the University of Edinburgh and Heriot-Watt University, is an open facility which provides researchers with training and access to state-of-the-art imaging technologies. ESRIC holds a summer school as well as a symposium annually.
