Royal Society of Edinburgh Fellowship for David FitzPatrick

Fellowship recognises leadership in genetics of developmental disorders: March 2019

David FitzPatrick,  Professor and Group Leader at the MRC Human Genetics Unit, University of Edinburgh was today named as one of 62 new Fellows of the Royal Society of Edinburgh, Scotland’s National Academy. Fellows are chosen for their contribution to the worlds of business, science, creative arts, health, technology, law, public engagement and international development.

David's research interests are in the identification of genetic causes of serious developmental disorders.  He studied medicine at the University of Edinburgh, subsequently training in  paediatrics in Edinburgh, Bristol and Glasgow and in clinical genetics in Glasgow as a Wellcome Trust Clinical Research Fellow. Following a Howard Hughes Medical Institute Clinical Research Fellowship at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, he has been a consultant in paediatric genetics in Edinburgh since 1994. Since 2000, as a group leader at the MRC Human Genetics Unit he has pursued his research interests in paediatric neurodevelopmental disorders and syndrome identification. As part of the Deciphering Developmental Disorders study he has contributed to  the improvement of diagnosis for thousand of children worldwide with developmental disorders. He has identified multiple new gene variants for developmental disorders and has used these findings, in collaboration with others, to probe the biology underlying disease.
