Student FAQs

When can I expect to receive my stipend?

Students can expect to receive their stipend on the 28th day of each calendar month.

Who should I contact if I do not receive my stipend?

Email the student-admin team.

What should I do when I need to update my bank details?

Students should email finance.helpline@ed.ac.uk

Who should I contact if I am unwell?

Students should contact their supervisors if they are unwell and unable to work.

Who is my PG Director of Studies?

All key Graduate Research and Training contacts are in the student handbook.

What annual leave am I entitled to?

Students can take up to eight weeks’ vacation time in a year, with agreement from their supervisor.  See student handbook.

Where do I get my student card?

Students can pick up their card from the main library in George Square.

How does my card get activated for door access?

The long card number should be sent to admin@igc.ed.ac.uk following attendance of IGC Health and Safety induction.

How do I order lab consumables in People and Money?

Students should ask their supervisor or lab manager for advice re this.

How can I claim expenses in People and Money?

Students should contact IGMM.Finance@igc.ed.ac.uk

When is my next assessment due?

All assessment guidelines are in the student handbook, but the student-admin team will send details of the PhD timeline to all students at the start of the academic year.  Students are asked to take note of their assessment timeline and record them in their PhD planner, so they can plan ahead.

Do I need to upload my PhD report in the online annual assessments?

Yes, all reports (including the 10-week report) should be uploaded to EUCLID in the annual review section, along with a signed copy of the thesis committee report.

Where can I find out information about submitting my thesis?

What paperwork do I need to complete when requesting a leave of absence, extension or Interruption of Studies?

Where can I access my certificate of matriculation?

Students who are currently matriculated can view, print and send their Certificate of Matriculation via the Electronic Document Service in MyEd --> Accounts --> My Student Record --> Documents.

You may place an order Paper documents can be ordered, but there will be a delay in these orders being processed.  We recommend that you send documents electronically via MyEd where possible.

Do I need to have a structured discussion with my supervisor each year?

Yes, all students are required to meet with their supervisor and submit the online form on the Graduate Research and Training website here:

Do I need to meet with my allocated Pastoral Support Committee?

This is not a mandatory requirement.  If you feel you do not need to meet with your PSC mentors, please just drop them an email to let them know that you do not wish to meet at this time.
