Tom, who was selected for his project Mechanisms and regulation of chromosome replication, will be an active member of the EMBO Young Investigator Programme for the next four years. EMBO is an organisation of more than 2,100 leading researchers that promotes excellence in the life sciences in Europe and beyond. The programme received 233 eligible applications - a success rate of 12% - with the successful research projects addressing a broad range of questions in the life sciences from the gut microbiome of infants to the demographics of indigenous American populations. The new EMBO Young Investigators, who come Austria, Czech Republic, Denmark, France, Germany, Israel, the Netherlands, Spain, Switzerland, UK, India and Taiwan, benefit from a variety of networking opportunities for them and their lab members. Further benefits include training and mentoring opportunities, as well as access to core facilities at the European Molecular Biology Laboratory in Heidelberg, Germany. Young investigators also receive a financial award of €15,000. In addition, they can apply for additional grants of up to €10,000 per year and gain support for networking activities such as joint group meetings or travelling to conferences.
